Award show red carpets often offer a mixed bag: some are hideously boring, some have horrid styling, some go especially hard (but that’s rare). I do think that this year offered a lot of pretty top-notch work, with the exception of a just a few plain bad ones (sorry, Ali Wong, Zendaya couldn’t even make that Balenciaga work) and mostly boring outfits of no particular note remain.
It was a glorious return to the season, though - Nikki Glaser did an incredible job of hosting, and I’ve completely forgotten the name of the comedian that completely bombed last year. Truly, I can’t remember his name.
Zendaya
I feel like she must be addressed first to simply touch on the obvious, because she and Law Roach work magic just about every single time she steps her foot on a red carpet. The effect that she has is truly incredible. This custom copper Louis Vuitton with matching stiletto is beautiful set against the tone of her skin, and gives her such shape. The hair reads glamorous Old Hollywood, the entire look harking back to Eartha Kitt and other famous black starlets. You might have also glimpsed her new engagement ring from Tom Holland? It remains that if she was not an actress, she would quite literally be a supermodel.
Anna Sawai
Anna Sawai has been showing well at red carpets since Shogun’s release. With her stylist, Karla Welch, they created this stunning faux leather peplum sheath in partnership with Dior. Though it’s a “simple” dress, it is beautiful and elevated on her, with the curved peplum giving additional visual interest and the faux leather adding something else to the overall look.
Andrew Garfield
Andrew! We’ve all seen the eyeglasses gif, right?
This gorgeous Gucci deep forest double-breasted tux with black satin lapel is modernized with a matching unbuttoned shirt and the long, casual read of the necklace. He honestly looks plain cool with his sunglasses’ green glass tint. I think Andrew is in a bit of a renaissance with his look, which he did really need. It only better highlights his great acting abilities.
Adam Brody
I really liked this Prada look on Adam and it’s actually a bit of a fun comparison to put this look side-by-side with Andrew. Though they are different shades of green, the tuxedos are rather similar, and the styling is a bit different. Adam’s is more “buttoned up” with the usual white shirt and matching bowtie. It’s not particularly exciting, but it looks really nice on him. Adam is in his own renaissance, as well.
Keri Russell
There were a lot of people who did not like this look and I think they’re all wrong. Keri Russell gives such a kick ass vibe, and this strong Stephane Rolland suiting look translates well coming out of her latest season as the star of the very, very fun The Diplomat. Method dressing continues to have a chokehold on me! What is there to live for if not red carpet style being an extension of the star’s work, or showcasing the direction they could go or want to go in the future? See: Ariana Grande’s 2025 Golden Globes Audrey Hepburn-esque look (which in my opinion does not work, but more power to her).
Mikey Madison
I haven’t even watched Anora yet, but I absolutely love Mikey Madison. She is one of the most composed 25-year-olds I think I’ve ever come across. There is something magnetic about her presence that I think must come across in her acting skills, given she’s nominated for a Golden Globe at her young age. This golden glittering paillette Bottega Veneta strapless sheath is begging for an award. It does feel a bit on the nose to wear gold to this show, but it also seems like a confident play. It fits her very well.
Andrew Scott
Andrew Scott pretty much routinely looks good and has been wearing a lot of these monochromatic suit looks (Jonathan Bailey’s been doing the same). I do love that this is Vivienne Westwood, and the bright, bright turquoise is a trend I have actually seen quite a bit in just the past two weeks, especially styled with black. It works for him. I’m about to get online and search for a piece in this blue neon. I keep thinking about this fun Banana Republic sweater dress, actually.
Dakota Fanning
Did Dakota’s sister Elle look beautiful? Yes, of course she did, like always - but, I’m ready for Elle to take more of a risk with her award looks, so the kudos this time go to Dakota in this gorgeous red Tony Ward gown that works so, so well for her. Perfect shade against her skin, classically beautiful and the scarf around her neck is so effortlessly gorgeous. The styling works well.
Nicole Kidman
WHAT a 2024 Nicole Kidman had! I am dying to see Babygirl. When I saw this Balenciaga Couture gown from the front, I was not particularly impressed by it. I chose this particular photo of Nicole because this is the way in which the dress and the look overall needs to be seen. The intentional draping that shows off her back, the pool of sparkles that fall to the floor, and the volume of the huge, glossy ponytail. Ugh! She looks so fresh and gorgeous. I love that she does not look as severe as she can sometimes come across.
Looking forward to what else is to come this award season. Until then!
Zendaya and Anna Sawai were my faves also!! (and Zoe Saldana - that chocolate brown was fab). I didn't realize Anna's was faux leather - makes me love it even more.
